A no-frills, bustling canteen on the second floor of the rebuilt Makishi Public Market, Hounen (also known as Katsutei Hounen) mixes plain table seating with a raised tatami area, while hand-written menu strips line the walls above the open kitchen. Founded in 1976, it serves Okinawan home cooking such as goya champuru, rafute, soki and tebichi set meals, goat soup and sea-grape bowls, plus sashimi platters, Orion beer and awamori. Many visitors buy fresh fish at the ground-floor stalls and have the kitchen cook it upstairs.
