Memento Mori is Japan's first standing "end-of-life planning" snack bar, a moody counter-and-sofa lounge near Morishita Station where guests sip drinks beside a real coffin used for hands-on "nokan" (casket-entry) experiences. It is hosted by mama Masumi Murata, a veteran of Japan's ocean-scattering funeral industry, and her staff, who invite open, unhurried conversation about aging, death, and what makes a life well lived. Snacks come from a rotating stand of over 100 Japanese regional canned foods, paired with beer, wine, gin, rum, tequila, whisky, and shochu. The mood is warm and conversational rather than somber, closer to chatting with a trusted confidante than attending a seminar.
