Founded by the eldest of the legendary Izutsu brothers — all three former sumo wrestlers — Sumo Chaya Terao has served the Ryogoku neighborhood since 1991, carrying on the chanko nabe recipes passed down inside the stable. The cozy tatami-floored dining room seats up to 50 and fills quickly with tourists, local workers, and sumo fans seeking an authentic taste of sumo culture. Five distinct broths are available: shoyu, miso, shio, curry, and ponzu — each matched with different vegetables, meatballs, and proteins. Daikon is cut into star shapes to celebrate winning bouts. Beloved side dishes like the wrestlers' miso dip and ginger clam stew complete the experience.
