DUG is a legendary jazz kissa and bar hidden in a basement along Shinjuku's Yasukuni-dori, beside the Shinjuku Piccadilly cinema, open since 1961. Owner Hozumi Nakadaira, a noted jazz photographer, lined the brick-walled interior with his portraits of jazz greats, giving the dim, nostalgic room its unmistakable atmosphere. The menu centers on specialty coffee, fresh juice, and a cocktail list of over 100 recipes, alongside simple bites like a signature sandwich, homemade meat pie, and cheese plates. After 65 years, DUG closed permanently on June 27, 2026, when the building it occupied was slated for demolition.
