Despite sharing its name with the famous gyudon chain, this Matsuya is an independently run backstreet izakaya tucked down a narrow alley near Kiyosumi-shirakawa, marked by a classic red paper lantern out front. The counter-and-table dining room has an old-school downtown diner feel that draws local office workers for weekday lunch teishoku and regulars for an easygoing evening drink. Signature dishes include a slow-simmered nikomi stew, ginger-fried pork, and a notably spicy chicken curry rice, all served in generous portions at old-fashioned prices.
